Whether you’re selling or buying a home, choosing a reliable realtor or agent is essential. There are several things to consider before deciding which real estate agent to hire.
When picking a realtor or real estate agent, keep the following tips in mind:
- Look at their credentials. Ideally, you should choose an agent with the right credentials to handle your situation. Examples of real estate credentials include Senior Real Estate Specialist (SRES), Accredited Buyer’s Representative (ABR) and Certified Residential Specialist (CRS). Also, keep in mind that a Realtor title indicates that the agent belongs to the National Association of Realtors, which means that they follow a strict code of ethics.
- Check out their current listings. Browse through the agent’s current listings to see what kinds of homes they’re working on selling and how many they’re handling. Choose an agent who has several listings available, which indicates that they have a strong real estate business, but watch out for too many listings, which could mean that you won’t get the level of attention you need from them.
- Find out how long they’ve been in business. Ask the agent directly, or look up this information with the state licensing authority. Look for agents who have been in the real estate business for a minimum of five years, since they’ll have plenty of knowledge about the local market and the buying and selling process.
- Verify their licensing. When picking a realtor or real estate agent, check with your state’s licensing authority to make sure that the agent or realtor is properly licensed. You can also find out if clients have filed formal complaints against the agent or if the agent has been subjected to any disciplinary actions.
