Damage-Free Holiday Decorating Tips

Decorating your home for the holidays is a favorite activity for most. If you’re looking to sell your home, just purchased your home or if you’ve recently undergone home renovations, however, it can also be a bit stressful due to the potential damage decorations can cause to paint or floors. To help, we’ve pulled together four easy tips for stress- and damage-free holiday decorating:

  1. Use over the door hooks. Instead of using nails or screws to attach your wreath to your front door, use an over the door hook. Attach some felt, fabric or pom poms to the back where it sits flat against the door so that the hook itself doesn’t scuff up the paint when the door opens and closes.
  2. Look for Japanese washi tape. This masking tape-like craft supply is perfect for displaying holiday cards without scuffing up your walls. Washi tape comes in many different colors, patterns and widths, and peels off of surfaces easily and without leaving a residue.
  3. Hang outdoor decor with zip ties. Use clear zip ties to secure garland and lights to your porch and outdoor railings. Fishing line works great too, and both solutions are almost invisible to passers-by.
  4. Purchase some brick clips or command hooks. Attach your stockings to the mantle with brick clips or command hooks, both of which are easily installed, hold a significant amount of weight and can be removed without a trace.
