The basement can oftentimes become a catchall space with limited use aside from storing out-of-season holiday decorations and old gym equipment – but, it doesn’t have to be! The basement not only serves as the foundation of your home, but can be easily transformed into an added living space for the whole family to enjoy. Here are a few easy steps to giving your basement its own much-needed facelift:

  • Tackle repairs first – Let’s face it: the basement isn’t the focal point of the home, and it can often be last on the list of must-do fixes. Before you take on any aesthetic adjustments be sure you’re making any necessary repairs; from re-plastering cracks to treating your floorboards with mold-resistant cleaning products, functionality is paramount.
  • Dry it out – Your basement is likely more humid than the rest of your home, and that’s normal. But if you’re looking to make the room a go-to living space it can be uncomfortable. Consider investing in a dehumidifier to clear the air.
  • Bring in the light – Brighten up even the darkest of spaces by adding in recessed lighting and choosing translucent window covers. The mixture of both artificial and natural light will ensure your space is illuminated and airy.
  • Open it up – If your basement has limited windows, the space can feel stuffy. Consider opening up the floor plan to make the room seem more spacious. It also doesn’t hurt to throw a bright toned paint on the walls to liven up the atmosphere.
