Earlier this year, we shared a roundup of the top three opportunity markets for 2016. One of these markets was active adult communities, as ERA professionals reported seeing 55+ communities grow in popularity throughout 2015. They reported that Baby Boomers, who make up about 31 percent of the home buying population, were looking to downsize without sacrificing their active lifestyles or proximity to family and friends.
Recently, the National Association of Homebuilders released a report highlighting the latest data around these retirees’ preferences for home size, location, amenities and community features. Realtor Magazine recently shared a summary of the findings, which included a list of what NAHB found to be the five most essential community features for Boomers:
- Single-family detached homes
- Close access to retail
- Proximity to a park or walking/jogging area
- Living near a lake
- Outdoor maintenance service provided
